Jeff Ireland and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad, Tenure

Well-known Miami sports personality Dan Le Batard spoke about the Miami Dolphins' situation on his radio show yesterday. Dan believes that head coach Tony Sparano, with a dearth of talent in Miami, is no different than Jim Caldwell, who is struggling to win in Indianapolis. The loss of Peyton Manning, he said, means more to the team than anything Caldwell could do. The addition of Andrew Luck could mean as much for Sparano's win/loss as having Manning does for the coach in Indy.

Le Batard also felt, that the addition of Bill Cowher, rumored to be receiving attention from Stephen Ross & Co. lately, would do nothing without a good QB.

His main point of contention was that personnel has a much greater impact than coaching on team success. I think Dan would agree with the assessment that the GM, the employer and architect of personnel, is more important to the success, or lack thereof, of an NFL team than the coach.

In looking past Sparano, to that GM, you see the root of the Phins' problems. The root's name is Jeff Ireland.
In the coming weeks the media, if they address him at all, will talk about how Ireland hasn't been sociable. How he has hid behind the scenes pushing buttons like the tiny man once believed to be the Wizard of Oz.

They'll wax poetic about how Ireland has let Sparano and Steven Ross take the blame.

That's neither here nor there in The Coach's opinion. How often do you see Green Bay's Ted Thompson, Baltimore's Ozzie Newsome, or Pittsburgh's Kevin Colbert step to the podium for post game press conferences? You don't. Those successful GMs are no more sociable or media accessible on a major scale than any other.

The real problem with Ireland's tenure in South Florida has nothing to do with media savvy or relationships with players, coaches or ownership. It's solely a matter of a bad job done filling the roster. The Dolphins fridge is full of bad groceries.

Instead of harping on bad free agent acquisitions (Reggie Bush, the Cowboy Castaways, etc.) and questionable trades (Brandon Marshall (which Monstar took his talent again?) or Jason Taylor to the Redskins), the best place to see Ireland's ineptitude is by looking at the NFL College Draft. Between 2008 and 2011, JI has had four cracks at making the Phins a contender, or at least markedly better.

For your viewing pleasure, after the page break is each pick Mr. Ireland banked his employment on, how they've fared, and some notable young men who were available at the time. Let's start in 2008:

Heat Game 4: "No Sweep For You!" What Went Wrong

So the brooms go back in the closet. Am I disappointed as a fan? Yes. Will we win game 5 in Miami? Yes. Am I more disappointed as a student of the game? YESSS.

Unlike some "experts" I won't take the easy way out and use terms like "clutch" and "heart" etc. to make emotional claims about things that can be explained by simple basketball knowledge. It's easy for Skip and Jon Barry to say Lebron is not clutch, or that the Heat are complacent. It's harder to explain what the team could have done in those situations (in their current skill sets) that could've changed the outcome. The simple answers like "Be more clutch" or "have some heart" don't offer any solutions. So the following few things are issues that I noticed while watching the game that I think the Coaching staff AND the players should focus on.

Starting Off On A Bad Note
I have to fault Spoelstra and Co. for lack of foresight with their starting lineups. Watching the Heat this year, it seems that Spo starts Illgauskas to get his engine going early before things pick up. That is understandable. Certainly, up 3-0 in a series the staff is thinking, we can afford a slight lull at the center position early until Big Z can get warm.

However, it only makes sense strategy-wise to start Joel Anthony in this series. While Big Z is a better matchup for the Bigs in Boston, Orlando and Chicago, Philly presents a smaller, more athletic front-court who is tougher for Z to match. In an elimination game, where adrenaline is up high, those young big men are going to put up hustle and effort that Big Z won't match early. In a playoff series you can't afford to let the other team's front-court set the tone, which is what they did in Game 4.

Joel Anthony provides the athleticism at the 5 and the hustle that can combat the Sixers' youth at that position while still being able to bang alongside a VERY soft Chris Bosh. The same can be said for the staff deciding to start Mike Bibby at the point over a younger, more athletic Mario Chalmers who is also a much better defender, or simply letting Lebron and Wade handle PG duties initially.

Shrinking The Bench
There are many good things about being a Pat Riley coaching disciple. However one key approach that Spoelstra obviously learned from Sir Riles hurt the Heat in Game 4 as it has since the beginning of the regular season.   This is the 8 man rotation. Spoelstra will usually only bring three or four off the bench and all others might as well stay at home.

The Heat have 4 healthy centers. There's no use in paying the other two (Magloire and Dampier) if you're not going to play them. In a 48 minute game, depending on match-ups/strategy, those four big men regardless of their age can give you 12 minutes a piece. They don't have to score. You have a scoring big man in Bosh and two of the NBA's best scorers in Wade & LBJ to handle that. You just need each man to commit to 10-12 minutes of hard defense, good picks and rebounding. When you only play Joel Anthony and Big Z, now you're asking Z (who's older than Methuselah) to play 24 solid minutes running with young energetic 76er big men. NOT GOOD.

Mr. Spoelstra also continuously ignored the fact that Henry Bibby's son couldn't hit Rhianna with Chris Brown's fists today. He was missing everything. Mike Bibby's ONLY reason for living is to make shots right now. He's old, slow, a terrible defender and cannot create his own shot. Couple this with the fact he's guarding 20 and 22 year old Philly PGs and you've got a recipe for disaster. NOT GOOD.

If young Erik would look past the 3rd player on his bench, he'd realize he has the perfect substitute for a struggling Bibby in uniform. Bibby's brother-in-law, Eddie House can shoot with the best of them, has enough energy to spark a complacent Heat lineup and will match the game speed and intensity of a desperate Philly squad. Instead he left Bibby out there to lose momentum for Miami repeatedly. It sounds harsh but, you gotta know when to give up on somebody and trust your bench. Spoelstra didn't and he paid for it.

Poor Defensive Strategy
The sad part about this issue was the Heat Staff implemented the solution earlier in the game. When trying to cut into the 1st half Philly lead, Miami started traping the ball handler off of pick n roll situations. This caught the player off guard and because a big man was a part of the trap, made it hard for the guard to see any options. This made Wade and Lebron able to shoot passing lanes and steal weak passes from PGs who made unsure passes to teammates they really couldn't see. This strategy not only got Miami back in the game, it got them a half time lead.

Once they came out of the locker room for the 2nd half, they all but abandoned the strategy and players like Jrue Holiday and Lou Williams were left in one-on-one situations that they could manipulate as they did early in the 1st half. Furthermore, lazy defense from Wade on Lou Williams at the end of the game contributed to the made three pointer with eight seconds left.

Like most pro players, Wade thought it was okay to put a hand in the face of Williams WHILE he shot the three. The appropriate time to put a hand in a shooter's face is BEFORE they think about shooting. This will either discourage them from shooting or change their line of sight and affect their shot. By the time Wade put a hand up, the ball was already in position to leave Williams' hands. NOT. GOOD.

Drive Ms. Daisy, Don't Drive LIKE Ms. Daisy
First things first. Chris Bosh is soft. Stop always shooting 15 footers and go to the rim. Stop getting pushed around. Yes you are skinny. No excuse for ALLOWING people to push you around. Cmon Son.

Now. Onto the last drive by Lebron. Everybody you hear from will say how he isn't clutch and so forth and so on. Ask them why IN BASKETBALL TERMS that last play proved fatal. They'll just say he missed. There's a simple basketball explanation for what Lebron did wrong. Just as he did against the Knicks at home in the regular season, Mr. James failed to drive to the basket with the proper approach.

At 6-8 265lbs, Lebron should drive to the MIDDLE of the paint. He is big enough to take the middle of the paint away from the defender while driving. By being in the middle, he can go either way and with either hand once he gets to the rim or dunk straight up. Instead, Lebron picks a side (Left in the Knicks game, right in the 76ers game) and gives the defender one less half of the paint to defend.

By going right, the defender only had to steer him away from the basket to the right, which he did. although Lebron was able to shed him late, his body was turned away from the basket and hence couldn't put all his strength towards a shot to the basket on his left, making for an easier block for Elton Brand.

Furthermore, if you have Lebron's body and the paint isn't congested, GO FOR THE DUNK. EVERY TIME. WHO'S GONNA STOP YOU??!?!

Because teams fear Wade flashing from the perimeter and Bosh spotting up and hitting a mid-range jumper off of Lebron's penetration, the lane will be relatively empty. This means dunk the ball. There's no excuse. Even if you don't make the shot/dunk, you'll get a foul by Elton Brand or one of the other front court players helping at the basket. By throwing up a one-hand touch layup going away from the basket and AWAY FROM THE DEFENSE, the refs won't give you the benefit of the doubt and you have to make the shot, a harder shot at that.

This has nothing to do with a clutch gene. This can be fixed with a simple video session and practice. Whether that happens, we shall see, but there's always a basketball explanation for basketball issues. Save me the melodramatic, soap opera, ESPN First Take explanations of success and failure.

Here are some other interesting statistics I think catered to a Philly victory in Game 4:
As always, the team who outrebounds...WINS:
Heat: 41 rebounds
76ers: 49 rebounds

Wade, Lebron, Evan Turner and James Jones (Back-court players) all had more rebounds than Chris Bosh:
Wade: 8
Lebron: 7
Turner: 6
Jones: 6
Bosh Spice: 5

Wade also had a higher amount of blocks than his front-court teammate:
Wade: 5
Bosh: 2

Wade only got to the line 2 times after being among the tops in the NBA in free throws attempted during the regular season.
Philly clearly won the battle from beyond the arc as the stats show:
Heat 3pt %: 5-23 (21.7%)
76ers 3pt %: 8-18 (44.4%)

Philly also bested Miami on Points in the Paint:

Philly: 36 pts.
Miami: 28 pts.

Lou Williams and Evan Turner combined for 34 points. (17 points apiece) of the Sixers' bench. The Heat bench combined had less than each of the aforementioned 76ers with 16 points total.

That said, we'll be closing out Game 5 easily, so Bring On The Celtics!!!

MJ Should Shut Up

I'm sure you've probably heard Michael Jordan's comments this past weekend about Lebron James' decision to join the Miami Heat. Recently, ESPN.com/TrueHoop blogger Henry Abbott wrote a response article (which can be seen HERE) which made some valid points. Rather than repeat what he said, I'll post my own thoughts and you can check his by clicking the link.
My thoughts on the matter after the jump.

Coach Says Blogger Highlight Series: The UNjealous

This is the second installment in a series of posts about fellow bloggers I've found interesting on the net. Stewart Cornelius of The Book of UNJEALOUS gave us a few minutes to discuss his blog. Here's our conversation:
*CS - Coach Says
*SC - Stew Cornelius

CS: Let's start by you giving everybody a little background about yourself
SC: Well I was born in NY moved to MD when I was 12. I went to a mostly white high school but had a dope ass high school experience. The people were lovely! I left there and went to the A for school. I didn't want to go to Morehouse at first but, looking back that was the best decision I ever made. I'm a business marketing major and I'm getting my specialty masters degree in fashion marketing. My dream job would be to work for Nike. I'm a laid back dude, I clown around a lot but I can be serious when the situation calls for it.

CS: What made you decide to make The Book of UNJEALOUS?
SC: I really decided to do it cause I started to notice that a lot of the people I hung out with collectively made up a lot of slang and people never knew what the hell we were talking about. I also made it because people always get mad or sad about things that are that terrible. I wanted people to have an outlet that they can come to and catch something funny or uplifting. I want people to appreciate the "UNjealous" and forget about the "Jealous."

CS: What do you want to get across with your blog?
SC: I want to get people to the point where they'll learn how not take life so seriously all the time. I also want people to get a sense of the kind of man I am. That's why I have links to shows I like and funny videos.

CS: Could you explain what "TheJealous" and "TheUNJealous" are?
SC: "The Jealous" is any unfavorable thing that happens in life. When they tow your car, that's the jealous. When you lose your phone in the club, that's the jealous. Basically anything bad. "The UNjealous" is any situation or thing that is favorable. If you got the job of your dreams, that's the UNjealous. If you find a $100 in your jeans pocket, that's the UNJealous! And the UNjealous is the focal point people need to learn how to enjoy and appreciate the UNjealous.

CS: How did you come up with those words/phrases?
SC: "The Jealous" came from this African Brother on Youtube named Tulu. He had a series of video or Vlogs if you will where his phrase was "Don't Jealous Me" in these videos he would describe a series of bad things that would happen to him. From then on whenever something bad happened A.Samp (Alex Sampson of A.Samp Was Right Blog) and I would just start calling it "The Jealous." lol

CS: Where do you want to go with your blog in the future?
SC: I just want it to be a place people can visit regularly for a laugh or two. Maybe when I start my t-shirt company people might even consider buying my shirts. But that's not the main goal. The goal is to get people to come through just like they would do with Twitter or there favorite magazine sites.

CS: Other than the blog do you want to try any other media outlets in the future?
SC: I hope to start doing short films in my spare time. I used to do it in high school and its always been a passion of mine to go back to it as a form of media.

CS: Who would you want to interview for your blog if you could pick anyone? Dead or Alive.
SC: Wow thats a rough question. It would probably be Dave Chappelle. He's had a huge impact on my sense of humor and because of that its only fair that I interview him.

CS: What would you ask him?
SC: Besides when the hell is he coming back? What was it like having that show? Besides the pressure, what were the good times like, because he kept America laughing. I would also wanna know what made him choose comedy because he's an intelligent guy and his jokes usually have some political value.

CS: What other blogs do you like?
SC: Usually my friends' blogs: A.Samp Was Right Blog, Coach Says Blog, MediaTakeout is cool, Fashionising.comFashionising, and Chinese Society Blog. That's about it. I check out people I'm familiar with because it's a chance to see whats in there mind and I appreciate that.

CS: What do you want people to take from your blog?
SC: The one thing I want people to take away from the blog is how to appreciate the good things that happen in their lives, and be thankful for their blessings. Its hard to do when bullshit happens but I promise they'll be a better person for it.

CS: Any other things you want to say?
SC: I hope people just enjoy the blog and agree with some of the things I have to say. Even if they don't, I still hope that they take away the main message, which is to enjoy the good events in life and forget the bad.

Coach Says Blogger Highlight Series: Mr. Philosopher

This is the first installment in a series of posts about fellow bloggers I've found interesting on the net.
John Torrey of Mr. Philosopher: Thoughts of the Ignorant Intellectual  took a few minutes to discuss his blog with me. Here's our conversation:
*CS - Coach Says
*JT - John Torrey

CS: Tell me a lil bit about you. Background stuff.
JT: I was born and raised in St. Louis, went to Morehouse College cause my big bro went and cause I figured I can go anywhere else after but you only get one shot at college?

CS: What made you decide to make a blog about philosophy?
JT: I've been a young philosopher for awhile. I've been a writer all my life and I've been my ignorant ass for even longer. lmao But there were issues that id expressed in those Facebook ramblings I'd done and I figured that it might be smart to merge em all.

CS: What made you interested in philosophy?
JT: My English teacher my junior of high school told me i had a philosophical mind and I'd always asked and dealt with the big questions. I went to college not to learn to go get a job but to keep on learning and figured I play to my strengths and the more philosophical texts I read, the more I was convinced I was in the right place.

CS: What do you want to get across with your blog?
JT: I want to push peoples preconceived notions. That's what pulled me to philosophy - the ability to be skeptical and push peoples thinking. A lot of us keep in a box or two. My sole purpose in the world is to get people to think more and I figured I can use the blog to touch folks and hopefully get some conversations going, and also use philosophy as a practical tool for everyday issues.

CS: Who would you most like to read your blog?
JT: EVERY MOTHERFUCKING BODY. I try to touch on a lot of different things so it can appeal to a lot of people. But i want Black folks of course cause that's where my worries always will be. But literally everybody. But real shit, sometimes cause white people read my shit I get nervous about saying some things cause I don't wanna make them feel like they can say some things. lol But for real, everybody can read my shit.

CS: What would your perfect blog post be about?
JT: The effects of capitalism on interpersonal relationships and explaining why the fuck things don't work out cause of it among other things. But I don't really have a perfect post. Just keeping puttin' stuff together and puttin' it out there is perfect.

CS: Where do you want to go with your blog in the future?
JT: Continuing to push the envelope and put down the things that'll become a book in the future. I mean a lot of my posts are just small workings of what can become much larger essays that can be rolled up into a book. So just keepin' down that path and definitely attracting more readers, which means keepin' consistent and plugging away.

CS: Other than the book do you want to try any other media outlets in the future?
JT: Seventy % of me says I should but I'm worried I'd be cussin' up a storm and shit. lol I might not be TV friendly.

CS: Tape Delay lol
JT: lol That would be a necessity. But I'm a bit hot blooded and so I'm worried. But I'd be open to speaking and being on radio and other stuff but don't be surprised if you hear that I popped off on someone. lol

CS: Who would you want to interview for your blog if you could pick anyone?
JT: Interviewing someone for my blog, wow. You know, I've never really thought bout it. Anybody alive or dead?

CS: Dead or Alive.
JT: If I knew German I'd have [Karl] Marx. If I knew Ancient Greek I'd have Zeno of Elea. But hell, I'd love to interview Black Obama just to see how much of a nigga he is. Cause i know he's a nigga. lol

CS: lol What would you ask them?
JT: Marx - I'd ask for his interpretation of the evolution of capitalism
Zeno - I'd ask him how it felt to be right all the time and how can people now do what he did which is make EVERYBODY else wrong. lol
Black Obama - I'd ask him to be real with me and explain his views of racism compared to his race-blind campaign.

CS: What other blogs do you like?
JT: Sadly I'm not as often checking others blogs. But yours is solid. I should check it more often. Uptown Notes by Dumi Lewis. The Uppity Negro is alright. I mean everybody got a damn blog. Aaron Rhodan's Blind I. I can tell you blogs I don't like. Where mothafuckas whine like shit and are too Blackademic for their own good. I like Niggacademics but i hate Blackademics cuz they tend to separate themselves from themselves. And it reflects in their writings and blogs usually cause black folk get impressed when you use big words. But I don't wanna rant. lol

CS: What do you want people to take from your blog?
JT: That philosophy isn't necessarily dry and that it's very useful. That black people can do philosophy. That we have a lot of notions we don't challenge and that we can challenge em. And don't settle for what you think you know. Fucking trouble it a bit.

CS: Any other things you want to say?
JT: Come by, check it out, COMMENT COMMENT COMMENT. And the brand name of Mr. Philosopher will be my money maker one day. lol

"What Grinds My Gears"

So I've been really irritated and angry lately. I feel like saying some things. What better place than on my blog right? So I've decided to start a new series called: "What Grinds My Gears"
I'll be putting people on blast, discussing issues, and pointing and yelling at my own computer screen...ALOT. With that being said, (inside joke) here's the first installment. So Enjoy:
1. The Makers Of "Waiting To Exhale"
This movie was the modern catalyst in the evil and unrealistic woman movement. It had to have had some audio frequency men could not hear which put any women within 30 miles of it's showing in "KILL MODE." Way to promote working through relationship problems....idiots.
2. People Who Argue, Just To Argue
Folks who argue and argue, even when they KNOW they're wrong should be sent to their own personal island with no food or resources and see if arguing with each other can sustain them. Hater of the decade Skip Bayless would be the first person sent to "Idisagree Island." Don't waste my time if you know I'm right...
3. People Who Retweet  @RevRunWisdom Religiously.
If I wanted to know what Russel Simmon's little brother had to say every day, I'D FOLLOW HIM. You idiots don't even personify those tweets. You put up inspiration, not for inspiration's sake, but as a way to get attention. Bet you don't know what @Jesus says. Thought you didn't. smh
4.  The Facebook/Myspace/Twitter "Grinders"
To the people who constantly tell of how they are "grindin." If you were really "grindin" you wouldn't constantly be sayin so on the internet, cause you'd be busy, ya know, GRINDIN. Also to those people who have a new resolution ev-er-y day, you haven't changed a bit. You're the same person who states they are a new, different person, every day. YOU AREN'T. And if you think I care.....I DON'T...

Thats Enough For Today. Straighten Up Folks.
